Common type of lamps which take student shades originated in the kerosene-burning era of the late 1800's. Single-standing brass and glass oil lamps with central draft oil burners and student lamps were designed to eliminate shadows and push the light downwards for studying. The popularity of these lamps continued well into the advent of electricity and are even today still produced in a variety of styles.
