Argand lamps are today considered a specific style of lamp. They
are named after Aimé Argand who invented the Argand burner in 1789.
This style of burner had a circular wick, through which a current of air
flows supplied oxygen to the flame, whereby increasing its brilliancy. It
was the forerunner of the more common round-wick, center draft
burners.
