SMOKE BELLS

Hanging Oil Lamp Diagram showing Smoke Bell at The Antique Lamp Co.

Smoke bells were used on early hanging lamps of the 19th century to prevent soot from blackening the ceiling when burning kerosene, whale oil, and other liquid fuels.

They are suspended from a small chain attached to the canopy or ceiling mount of the fixture and are just a few inches above the chimney.
