Solar lamps are from the 1850's and were designed to burn whale oil or lard. Shades were cut and polished to reflect the light. A solar lamp is generally a tall single-standing lamp with a central circular reservoir for oil. Later, the solar lamp's design was adapted for kerosene in the form of Astral lamps.
