In the 1930's, Illuminating Engineering Society (I.E.S.) standards encouraged better lighting in America through higher wattage output and the development of the 3-way bulb. Large "Mogul" bulbs which go up to 350 watts were introduced and provided a powerful light source without being harsh.

Torchieres
are tall floor lamps which have a central light and a glass shade which pushes
the light upwards. Light is then reflected off of the ceiling to illuminate a room.
Originally, when first introduced in France in the late 17th century, torchieres held a single candle.
