It is what some would call a mom and pop store, owned an operated by us, the husband and wife team of John and Sue Tobin. That's us to the right, along with friends Paige and Snuggler. We first became "hooked on antiques" in the late 1970’s when we began furnishing our first apartment. Our endeavors into the antique business began serendipitously when we quickly accumulated far more "stuff" than could possibly fit into our tiny apartment! What began way back then as a hobby, has now become a full-time operation. John has a degree in electrical mechanics and had worked in industry for many years before following the dream to open his own antique lighting store. Sue has been teaching Art in a public school for over 30 years. The pieces just seemed to fit together nicely - art and technology, form and function, and all that. So in 1997, The Antique Lamp Co. was born and we've been in business on Buffalo's Hertel Avenue ever since. John is now Western New York’s only full-time, professional lamp restorer with a full inventory of Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Mission, Victorian, and Moderne lighting. Most of all, he doesn't believe in fixing lamps, he believes in restoring them. John's lamps are surrounded by opulent displays filled with unique antiques, china, florals, gifts, jewelry and accessories of every kind. Guess who's idea that was... A few years later, we added "Gift Emporium" to our name. Once the World Wide Web phenomenon hit, the internet quickly became the perfect avenue to help people far from Buffalo to restore the beauty to their antique lamps and provide them with the parts and shades they needed. Our on-line catalog quickly became a necessity. So, here we are now! It has been a wild and wonderful ride over the years, but the best part of it all has been the delightful people with whom we've done business. Some have even become treasured friends and its because of our family and friends that we have been able to build The Antique Lamp Co. & Gift Emporium into a business where nice really does matter.
